woodstock music festival 4O years ago!

Oh, and there we were, all in one place A generation lost in space With no time left to start againSo come on, Jack, be nimble, Jack be quick Jack Flash sat on a candlestick' Cause fire is the devils only friend Oh, and as I watched him on the stage My hands were clenched in fists of rage No angel born in Hell Could break that Satan's spell And as flames climbed high into the night To light the sacrificial riteI saw Satan laughing with delight The day the music died He was singing{Refrain}

It also seems to refer to the 'hippie era' where being on drugs is known as 'spaced out'. It was also a time when teenagers seemed alienated from their parents, and disillusioned by the government spending too much money on the space race & Vietnam war instead of solving domestic poverty & social inequities. Cynics even said JFK conceived of the race to the moon to deflect attention from the aborted Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba & Johnson / Nixon continued emphasis on space exploration to instill national pride during the costly & ultimately unsuccessful Vietnam war. The "Generation lost in space" could be those who ignored messages of folk songs of 50s & 60s and dwelled on the spectacle of space exploration rather than solving problems on earth (Ref: Bob Katz)
This generation was called the 'lost generation' The reference to time could be about all the time people spent on drugs, and not living in the 'real world.' However it could also refer to the destruction of the environment and being unable to put it right. Its also been suggested that it could refer to the soldiers generation lost in Vietnam.
"Jack be nimble Jack be quick" may refer to President Kennedy having to use quick diplomacy during the Cuban missile crisis to avert a nuclear war. "Fire is the devils only friend" may be mocking the communists belligerence. (Ref: Asad Jaleel) That said the rest of the verse doesn't really fit. Perhaps Don is once again using double meaning i.e. Cuban missile crisis & the Stones concert.
Jack could be a reference to Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones) and comes from their song 'Jumpin Jack Flash.' (1968) The Stones, like The Beatles played a number of concerts at Candlestick park ("sat on a candlestick") however it appears, these were 1981 & onwards, after American Pie was written. Jack Flash is also a term used for the drug Heroin. Fire could also refer to drugs meaning that they are an evil substance. It has been suggested to me that "Fire is the devil's only friend", can also be a reference to The Grateful Dead, because they suggested that Hell's Angels be used for security. (see interpretation of next verse) (George Hartranft, USA)A detective who works on drugs cases told me that the term "Jack Flash sat on a candlestick" is commonly used to describe the method by which heroin is prepared for consumption. Heroin is usually left cooking on a fire on top of a spoon. Many heroin users use that term to describe the preparation of such drug. This would certainly fit with the rest of the verse. It has also been suggested that "Jack Flash sat on a candlestick" may refer to the Apollo 1 spacecraft catching fire on the launch pad. "Jack Flash" having been used as a generic astronaut term as in Flash Gordon. (Ref: Thom West, JK)Could "My hands were clenched in fists of rage" be Don McLean himself at The Stones Altamont concert? This is about the 'Hell's Angels who worked as security at The Stones concert at Altamont Speedway in December 1969. In the darkness near to the front of the stage where The Stones were playing, the 'Hell's Angels' beat and stabbed a man called Meredith Hunter to death. He was killed during the singing of 'Sympathy for the Devil,' ("satan's spell") which Jagger, at the time, said they would never perform again. Due to McLean's religious grounding, he may have disapproved of The Stones and their songs about the devil. (' Satanic Majesties' Request' & 'Sympathy for the Devil')The flames could be the bonfires around where the concert was, and Meredith being seen as a sacrifice. Satan therefore appears to be Jagger, as he was prancing about on stage while Meredith was being beaten.

wow, saw these words on americanmoonpie.com it really tells how epic woodstock was, a different generation that me and my peers will NEVER experience!

abercrombie & fitch??

abercrombie & fitch is the topic for this posting. abercrombie just like many teens my age do. but i mostly shop at abercrombie not fitch because i am really tiny for my age. anyway, abercrombie is franchise that is VERY successful. why wouldn't it be? they have a great marketing strategy much like harris teeter's, there strategy is let's let all the money go to us. like harris teeter they build many harris teeter's in close proximity to each other which says let's let our competition be US it's a win-win. many people say oh i don't like hollister as much as abercrombie they're basically the same thing owned by the SAME people. the abercrombie & fitch brand has 5 stores...1) abercrombie & fitch aimed more towards college students started ofcourse in 1982 2) abercrombie aimed towards kids, middle schoolers and elementary aged kids and less expensive than the fitch store 3) hollister aimed towards high schoolers and teens, same prices as abercrombie kids 4) ruehl no. 925 most expensive of the flagship, aimed primarily towards the out of college group 25-early/mid 30's(due to shut down all stores completely by January 2010) 5) gilly hicks: the underwear store, made to compete with victoria's secret pink and aerie. Abercrombie & Fitch is notably widely successful, the fitch store alone bringing in nearly 1.6 billion a year and all 5 stores brining in roughly around 3.8 billion a year! But a part of what makes A&F widely talked about are the various controversies revolving around the name Abercrombie & Fitch.
The first controversy came from this quartely A&F magazine-catalog(magalog) that had nude and partially nude pictures of models on pages without the various products. This feature was supposed to be only accessed to adults but any teen could see it as well.

Minority employees of the storesvclaimed that likable positions in the company were offered only to white americans, primarily men. This raised many questions of issues regarding discrimination against minority.

Abercrombie & Fitch's products are also very controversial including:
Shirts depicting racial discrimination against Asian Americans
Abecrombie(kids) released thongs for young girls featuring very provocative messages
Shirts with stereotypical slogans on them including "i had a nightmare i was a brunette", "blondes have more fun", and "who needs brains when you have these"

Products that were claimed amongst Christians to have "an unusual degree of antagonism to the name of Christ"

Despite all these issues, Abercrombie & Fitch is still one of the leading brands amongst teen fashion. I do not hate Abercrombie, far from it, i hate to say but my room is filled with bags from Abercrombie but when i am buying there clothes sometimes i do wonder, if i as an african-american female would be able to work there. but maybe since they are getting better at that. i'll just have to see when i turn 17 i hope to get a job at Abercrombie kids so we'll see. but it is more comforting seeing many Blacks and Asians ringing up my clothes at the stores and Abercrombie has gotten much better about their issues and are attempting to include more minorities, and i've noticed more models of color. i've seen many Black models, and a few Asians. Hopefully, abercrombie is working on this because OFCOURSE there is still tons of room for improvement.

the bush CLEAN-UP!

"bush protected us, obama is harming us!?" i have heard this blattant statement many times on twitter from the "GOPThinker"and another user that i can't remember there url. when i heard this i really only thought ONE thing. wow, such bull shit. utter bull shit. seriously, maybe president obama hasn't been able to restore things completely yet and has also done some experimental things in these 8 months. but honestly, it's only been 8 months! bush fucked up our country in 8 years. bush didn't, i repeat DIDN'T protect us. he did pretty much everything BUT protect us! bush did make endless promises to protect us but did he? definitely NOT! when bush recieved warning that taliban might possibly have a threat coming 2 or 4 days(i need to check up on my farenheit 9/11 haha) before the 9/11 attack but didnt do anything about it because he was in texas on vacay he was NOT protecting us. when he sat in that classroom of kindergartners reading stories as the planes were crashing he was NOT protecting us! so my point is that bush did not protect us! now, back to obama, okay the universal health care thing is being made partially to protect us! many americans can't get the care that they need for their illnesses because they can not afford it. obama is trying to protect them! sure there are downfalls to universal health care but the intension of the plan IS to protect us!

who, what?? so politically clueless.♥

okay im VERY upset when i hear teens my age dont care about politics...they dont care about what's going on in the government. okay i need to say two things about that!

1. I am NOT, i repeat NOT one of those people! and, i NEVER have. my fixation with politics started when i was in the 2nd grade! this was, i believe the year of 2OOO when the huge Bush election occured. i asked EVERY person i saw. who are you voting for? like a little news anchor. if they said Bush i said bad. then, i'd ask are you a democrat or a republican! my mom told me it was rude but i kept asking! LOL then in 4th grade i created a many newsletter about political events esp. the bush re-election and the war. i was obsessed, so much so that i attended political rallies.

2. NOT caring about the government at ANY age is STUPID. it's YOUR life, you NEED to know what's going on!! i HATE it, when people i know don't vote! it's stupid. you don't vote because you don't have time but when women and african-americans COULDN'T vote, you were pissed fighting for that right! now, everyone who is a legal US citizen CAN, yet YOU don't use that right! why? i can't wait to vote, seriously, it's SO powerful. you HAVE a voice! sure, there's the electoral college but STILL the popular vote is there! VOTE! use your right! seriously, USE it!

whats going on in our country now?

hello i am grace. i enjoy watching cnn shows on weekdays especially anderson cooper 360. a big topic in the situtation room and many talk shows recently is obama's leadership. does anyone know what faco is?? i DO. faco is the new bill that President Obama has created. i should say that i am a democrat. i am also a LIBERAL, and proud of it. i wanted Hillary Rodham Clinton to be president of the US of A, not Obama. I did support Obama after because frankly, I had WAY more faith in Obama than McCain. anyway, i am confused about the socialism idea. Many conservatives believe that Obama is spreading socialism across our country. what is this socialism so many conservatives speak of! according to dictionary.com, socialism is a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole. from that definition ofcourse you will form your own opinion about it. but i feel what is so wrong with socialism as long as it helps restore our country. it's also true that in previous countries as socialism was attempted those governments may have failed but did they have the same power that we do! doubtful, so i ask what is so wrong with socialism IF indeed president obama is using "ASPECTS" of it to HELP us!
